DOT Motorcycle Helmet basics about helmets

So you wanted to know about DOT Motorcycle Helmets?  You’ve come to the right place!

DOT stands for department of transportation and is a certification of what a helmet should contain to make it safe and be able to keep your head protected.

Now I know that almost everyone who rides a bike enjoys having some time riding without wearing their helmet

Now I know that almost everyone who rides a bike enjoys having some time riding without wearing their helmet…I am no exception to this…I love the freedom of having my head exposed to the wind and air…I`m also bald so there may be a few less sensory points, but anyway….I do enjoy the feel of the wind across my scalp…the freedom of being open to the elements.

50 years ago helmets weren’t a law or as necessary with all the traffic we have today

50 years ago helmets weren’t a law or as necessary with all the traffic we have today.  So why have them today?!?  It all comes down to safety.  Keeping you safe and being able to live another day.

There is a motorcycle saying that goes something like this…you have either dropped your bike or you WILL drop your bike…meaning we all at some point have an accident…so you can either be safe when you do have that accident or be exposed to the elements.  An accident means it`s not on purpose…otherwise they wouldn’t call them accidents now would they?!?  So you might as well stack the odds in your favour and wear a helmet.

DOT motorcycle helmets are there to protect you and keep your head intact.

DOT motorcycle helmets are there to protect you and keep your head intact.  Some helmets cover your whole head…they are called full face helmets…some have an open mouth or no chin protection…they are called 3/4 face helmets…some just come down to the top of your ears…they are called half helmets.  Now the more a helmet covers your head, the safer it will be…even though there is a DOT stamp on the half helmets…they still will offer some protection for your head…but not as much as a full face which also provides chin protection.

What I do find is that when I am wearing a helmet

What I do find is that when I am wearing a helmet…it has to be able to be cool enough in hot temperatures and warm enough in cool temperatures….unfortunately no one helmet does both…so i find the 3/4 face helmet to be a good compromise, as you have quite a bit of air through the helmet.  Some have a removable face shield allowing more ventilation or putting the visor on for cooler temperatures or in the rain.

All DOT motorcycle helmets come with the DOT certification

All DOT motorcycle helmets come with the DOT certification but some will provide better protection than others…what is ultimately most important is that you are wearing yours….because you never know when you will get into an accident…you’re better off with a helmet than nothing at all….so remember to wear yours today.
