In the entry level line up of full face motorcycle helmets by Scorpion…the EXO-400 takes on a new look! They have added a new design called the “Rapture” in light of the raptor in mythology. Now this shell is like the others in the EXO-400 line up…with all the benefits listed below:
- POLYCARBONATE composite shell
- SPEEDSHIFT quick change
- EVERCLEAR face shield locking
- KWIKWICK washable moisture
- AERO-TUNED ventilation system
- BREATH nose shield
- SNELL / DOT
With the speed shift…your shield can be changed out in only 10 seconds…and that’s without any tools! Then the kwikwick washable liner can be removed for easy cleaning. The nose shield helps to reduce moisture build up on the shield. Finally, the Everclear which significantly reduces moisture/fog build on the shield as well. Top all that off with both a Snell and DOT rating…so how can this be entry level?
It is only an entry level for the simple fact that it is a polycarbonate shell – meaning it’s plastic. Now, don’t get me wrong, as I have had a couple of polycarb helmets over the years as well…but it is an entry level shell compared with fibreglass or carbon fibre. Both carbon fibre and fibreglass have fibres that keep the plastic together like shredded wheat cereal.
If the helmet is damaged in an accident, the fibres of the carbon or fibreglass will continue to work at keeping the helmet together. However, the polycarb helmet is more like a cold egg being cracked on the side of a frying pan…there is nothing keeping it together under duress.
Overall, is the EXO-400 a DOT and Snell approved helmet? A resounding yes…there are other helmets that will maintain their integrity better in case of an accident…but as far as an entry level full face motorcycle helmet goes….this one is up there for the amount of protection you get for the price.
